1 – Preparation of Your Existing Surface

Your existing surface must be solid, clean, dry and free of any oil or grease. This includes any old paintwork too! Always ensure your existing surface is also secure and stable. Be sure to also check for any existing mould. If applying onto these surfaces, ensure you also allow their appropriate drying times.

  • Gypsum Plaster – 4 weeks (1 week for skim coats on plasterboard)
  • Sand: Cement render – 2 weeks
  • Concrete – 6 weeks

Ensure any construction boards are well secured and rigid with no protruding fixings and that propriety boards are installed as per manufacturer instructions.

Substrates that are highly absorbent or gypsum-based must be pre-treated with the Shower Waterproofing Kit Primer that is included. Wait 30 minutes to 2 hours until the coating of the timer has completely dried.

The image shows a corner of a bathroom where shower waterproofing is in progress. A plastic bucket labelled "Mapei" is placed on the floor, which his partially covered with a waterproofing membrane. A paint roller, likely used for applying a waterproofing primer, rests nearby. The setup indicates the application process of a shower waterproofing kit.

2 – Application of Shower Waterproofing Kit

To ensure the best results with the shower waterproofing kit, we recommend installing the Shower Waterproofing Tape to form elastic joints between internal wall angles and board joints, around any pipes and between walls and bath/shower trays.

The image shows tools and materials laid out for shower waterproofing preparation. A large bucket labelled "Mapegum WPS" sits on the floor, surrounded by a paintbrush, a roller, a pair if scissors, and a metal drain cover. A roll of mesh tape, typically used to reinforce corners and seams, is also visible, indicating the next steps in the waterproofing process. The setup suggest the application of a shower waterproofing kit.

Cut the tape to an appropriate size using a sharp knife or scissors. If you are applying to a shower tray or bath. be sure to thoroughly degrease the edges to be waterproofed with a suitable solvent such as acetone. Lightly abrade the surface you are applying the tape onto, and wipe with a solvent again.

The image shows the corner of a bathroom in the process of being waterproofed. A bucket of "Mapegum WPS" sits on the floor, with waterproofing tape already applied along the wall corners. The tape is coated with a layer of waterproofing material, sealing the seams where the walls meet the floor. Scissors and a putty knife are also visible, indicating tools used in the application process. This setup is part of a shower waterproofing kit being used to prepare the are for tiling.

Using a brush, apply a narrow strip of Mapegum WPS that is slightly wider than the tape applied. When applying the tape to your shower base/bath cut one side of the scrim edge from the Shower Waterproofing Tape leaving the grey rubber centre. Do not cut for other areas e.g. internal wall angles.

Ensure the tape sits on the shower base, cut edge over most, but does not protrude beyond the thickness of the covering and its adhesive bed. When installing the tape, ensure the tape is flush to the substrate with no air pockets or creases. Using a brush, apply a narrow strip of Mapegum WPS that is slightly wider than the tape applied.

3 – Application of Mapegum WPS

Mapegum WPS must be applied evenly in thin coats. Wait until the first coat is dry before you apply any further coats. This can take between 1-2 hours depending on the temperature of the room. The final thickness of Mapegum WPS must never be thinner than 0.8mm (equivalent to a dry thickness of 0.5mm), in order to form a consistent, flexible continuous coat. Make sure that there are no gaps caused by imperfections in the substrate.

The image shows a bathroom corner where waterproofing work is in progress. The walls and floor edges are sealed with waterproofing tape, which has been applied along the seams. A layer of waterproofing material has been rolled over the tape, creating a smooth, sealed surface. A paint roller, used for applying the waterproofing compound, rests on the floor nearby. This scene depicts a crucial step in using a shower waterproofing kit to prepare the area for tiling.

After 12-14 hours from applying the final coat of Mapegum WPS (according to temperature conditions), the surface is ready for your wall or floor covering!
